Then we will visit Trujillo and discover the site of Chan Chan which was declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1986 – the biggest clay town in the world and the capital of the Chimu Kingdom. After the visit the rest of the day will be free. CHAN CHAN: The ancient Chimú kingdom (700-1400 AD) founded their capital by the banks of the Moche River in the department of La Libertad and called it Jang-Jang, which in the ancient Mochica language means "sun-sun". Chan Chan, which spans an area of 20 square km, is the largest mud-brick citadel dating back to the pre-Hispanic era. To build it, the Chimú architects used clay, mud, pebbles, wood, reeds, straw and cane, materials which enable the citadel to blend in with the sandy coasts. The complex is made up of many cities within a city, each of which has its own single entrance which leads down a corridor that opens up into other passageways lining walls and buildings featuring some marvellous rectangular architecture: inner patios, residences, administrative buildings, temples, platforms and storehouses. The walls were decorated with haut-relief friezes done in geometric and animal figures. The T-shaped platform that housed the king's burial chamber was the most important construction in the complex. The citadel was surrounded by outlying quarters which housed the kingdom's producers and servants. The separate cities today have been given the names of the archaeologists who studied them (Rivero, Tschudi, Bandelier, Uhle, Tello). The Rivero city was the seat of Minchancamán, the last of the Chimú rulers, who was captured by the Incas and taken to Cuzco, according to the Spanish chroniclers. The city was the urban centre of a vast regional state which covered half of the Peruvian coast, stretching from Tumbes on the Ecuadorian border down as far south as Lima. All roads branched out from Chan Chan.

After breakfast we leave to visit the famous Huaca de Sol and de la Luna which were constructed by the Mochicas and measure more than 20m/66ft high. After lunch we visit La Huaca El Dragon. In the afternoon we return to the hotel and the evening is free.
HUACA DE SOL AND DE LA LUNA: The countryside in the province of La Libertad was the land where the ancient Mochica culture chose to build up its most important ceremonial centres: The Huaca del Sol and the Huaca de la Luna. Located only 8 km away from the city of Trujillo, these impressive monuments are more than 1,500 years old. The Huaca or Temple of the Sun functioned as an administrative and political centre. It is a staggered pyramid of approximately 43 meters high that was built by 250,000 men in only three days according to tradition. Around 70 million adobe bricks were used for its construction. The Huaca de la Luna or Temple of the Moon is located 500 meters away from the Huaca del Sol. This construction was built for ceremonial purposes and it is formed by six superimposed temples built during different periods of the Mochica culture. Its polychrome big walls, on which they represented the Mochica divinity known as Ai-Apaec (Slaughterer God), are remarkable since they are very well preserved. It is thought that multiple human sacrifices were held to honour this god, rituals that have been captured in other elements of the Mochica iconography. Other characters have been also represented on its façade: serpents, fishermen, huge spiders holding ceremonial knives, priests, etc. These would have been designed to pay tribute to the water and the fertility of the land.
LA HUACA DRAGON OR RAINBOW: This adobe pyramid is especially important because it was constructed in the early days of the Chimu culture at the end of the cultures Tiahuanaco and Huari and is estimated to be 1100 years old. The temple was called Ciempiés (Centipede) (Horkheimer, 1944) and The Dragon (Schaedel, 1948). There are still evidences in some reliefs of yellow colour, for that reason it was also known as Huaca de la Muralla Dorada (Temple of the Golden Wall). However, the most utilized denomination is Arco Iris (Rainbow).

In the morning we take a private vehicle to Chiclayo and on the way we visit the Huaca El Brujo and before arriving at the hotel we visit Huaca Rajada (Lord of Sipan) We arrive in Chiclayo in the afternoon and the evening is free.
HUACA EL BRUJO: The El Brujo Archaeological Complex 60km/38mi north of Trujillo is an ancient monument of the Moche culture. Huaca El Brujo (or Cortada/Partida) and Huaca Cao Viejo (or Huaca Blanca) were built by the Moche sometime between 1 and 600 AD. Huaca Cao Viejo is famous for its polychrome reliefs and mural paintings, and the discovery of the Señora de Cao, the first known Governess in Peru. A letter found during excavations at the site may contain translations of numbers written in Quingnam or Pescadora using the decimal system, the first physical evidence for existence of either of these languages.
HUACA RAJADA (LORD OF SIPÁN): In 1987 a team of archaeologists discover the skeleton of the Lord of Sipán one of the greatest warlords of the Moche people. And the discovery have enabled historians and archaeologists to piece together much of the lost history of an impressive civilization which dominated most of northern Peru for centuries. The Lord of Sipán was buried with his head pointing south, his nose and ears covered with gold relics and his feet clad in silver. To accompany him, his subjects sacrificed women, children and llamas, while the finest warriors of the era accompanied their overlord on his voyage to the Afterlife.

Today we visit the pyramids of Túcume an archaeological site of rare beauty with its adobe pyramids approx. 40m/131ft high that belong to the Lambayeque culture. A rich fauna and hundred-year-old vegetation surround the site. After lunch we visit the modern museum of the royal tomb of Sipan which has a collection of gold object which were found in the tomb and not far from there we finish our visit in the Brüning museum. After our visits we head to the airport to fly back to Lima. Upon arrival at the international airport of Lima our team will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day will be free.
PYRAMIDES OF TUCUME: The pyramid complex of Túcume is one of the most important pre-inca centres because of its size and the quality of its structure. This site was a major regional centre, maybe even the capital of the successive occupations of the area by the Lambayeque/Sican (800-1350 AD), Chimú (1350–1450 AD) and Inca (1450–1532 AD). Local shaman healers (curanderos) invoke power of Túcume and La Raya Mountain in their rituals, and local people fear these sites.
El MUSEO NATIONAL TUMBAS REALES DE SIPAN: This modern museum houses most of the important artefacts which Dr. Walter Alva Alva found in 1987. He helped found and support construction of the museum, which opened in 2002. The museum was designed to resemble the ancient Moche tombs and the museum's main attraction is the Lord of Sipan and his entourage, who accompanied him to the after world with him. The warriors who were buried with him had amputated feet, as if to prevent their leaving the tomb. The women were dressed in ceremonial clothes. Dogs, llamas, and more than 80 huacos (works of ceramic pottery) were also buried in the tomb.
THE NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM BRUNING: The Brüning Museum, also known as Museo Regional Arqueológico Enrique Bruning de Lambayeque was inaugurated in 1924. It is an excellent museum based on the collections of Bruning gathered at the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. The Peruvian government acquired this collection in 1925. This museum has been constantly enriched by pieces obtained in confiscations, donations and discoveries. The most recent procurement is the pieces acquired in the Grave of the "Master of Sipán". His remains and the mortuary trousseau rest between the walls of the museum. The Golden Room shows up to 500 works of art. The museum was constructed as a modern and functional facility, inspired by the works of Corbusier. There are more than 1500 pieces from different cultures, including an invaluable textile collection and ceramics of Chimú and Vicus. Thousands of golden objects are kept in sealed rooms, including funeral masks of copper, ceremonial vessels, an extraordinary necklace and jewellery of proveniences of Mochica and Chimú and pieces of the culture Lambayeque. In the gardens of this beautiful museum depositor emphasizes the figure of Naylamp, founder of the Lambayecanos Kings' dynasty. The frontage has a mural with Lambayecanos motives. The interior of the principal building is a sequence of four levels, between his brokers and lounges exhibit more than 1,400 archaeological pieces, declarations that were bequeathed of the cultures Lambayeque, Moche, Chavín, Vicus, Inca and others. The most important pieces date of more than 10,000 years ago.

They are anchored with ropes attached to sticks driven into the bottom of the lake. The reeds at the bottoms of the islands rot away fairly quickly, so new reeds are added to the top constantly, about every three months. The islands last about thirty years. After breakfast we will do the fly-over of the Nazca lines. The Nazca lines were discovered in 1926/27 and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. They are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert and show hundreds of individual figures range in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks, orcas, and lizards. The lines are shallow designs made in the ground by removing the reddish pebbles and uncovering the whitish/greyish ground beneath. The largest figures are over 200m/660ft across! Due to the dry, windless, and stable climate of the plateau and its isolation, for the most part the lines have been preserved. Extremely rare changes in weather may temporarily alter the general designs. For those you have chosen not to do the fly-over we leave to visit the Chauchilla cemetery where we can see very well-preserved mummies and archaeological remains of the Nazca culture. We explore the local culture through a visit to a pottery workshop and we visit the aqueducts which used to serve to divert an underground source and recover the water.
